Exterior Painting: How to Get It Right the First Time

by | Oct 1, 2025

A fresh coat of paint on your home’s exterior isn’t just about curb appeal; it’s also one of the best ways to protect your investment. But did you know that when and how you paint can make a huge difference in how long that beautiful finish lasts? If you’re planning an exterior painting project, here’s what you need to know now to get the best results and keep them looking great as long as possible.

When’s the best time to paint your home’s exterior?

Timing is everything—especially when it comes to painting outdoors. The weather, temperature, and even humidity levels play a big role in how well paint adheres and cures. Here’s a seasonal breakdown:

Spring & Early Summer
This is one of the most popular times to paint. Temperatures are moderate, and there’s usually less rainfall. Just make sure the surface is dry and the forecast stays clear for at least a few days.

Late Summer & Early Fall
Cooler nights and warm (but not too hot) days make this another great window for exterior painting. Avoid painting too late in the season when frost or cold temperatures could affect drying times.

Make sure to avoid…

  • Extremely hot or cold temperatures. Paint doesn’t cure properly if it’s too cold (usually below 50°F) or too hot (above 85°F).
  • Rainy or humid weather. Moisture prevents proper adhesion and can lead to bubbling, streaks, or mildew.

Do certain techniques lead to better or longer-lasting results?

It’s not just about slapping on a coat of paint—preparation and technique are everything when it comes to lasting results. We’ve written up a list of steps we find crucial. Here’s how the pros like us ensure a finish that stays perfect for years.

1. Start with a clean surface.
Dirt, mildew, and loose paint can all turn your new coat of paint into a peeling mess. Power washing the surface is often the first step to ensure the paint sticks properly. After all, painting is much easier when you have a properly clean canvas to work with.

2. Scrape, sand, and repair.
Any peeling paint or chipping wood should be thoroughly scraped off, and then the surface should be sanded smooth. Fill any cracks or holes with appropriate exterior-grade filler.

3. Don’t forget to use primer.
If you’re painting bare wood, repaired areas, or making a major color change, primer is essential for even coverage and maximum adhesion, and will keep other colors from bleeding through.

4. Choose a quality paint.
Investing in premium exterior paint is worth it. Look for products that are UV-resistant, mold/mildew-resistant, and designed for your climate (we know Montana weather can be tricky—that’s why we’re sure to always use high-quality paint!).

5. Apply the right way.
Use brushes and rollers designed for exterior painting, and apply at least two coats for the most durable finish. Spraying is another option for large surfaces, but should always be done by experienced professionals to avoid overspray or uneven application. Bonus tip: Keep an eye on your home’s condition.

Paint isn’t permanent. Depending on the material and climate, exterior paint may need refreshing as often as every 5 to 10 years. If you see signs of fading, chipping, or peeling, it might be time to consider repainting before damage sets in.
