Between the daily hustle, managing your busy schedule, and enjoying the outdoor adventures that Montana has to offer, you deserve a peaceful retreat at the end of the day. Yet many of us are staring at bedroom walls that do the exact opposite of helping relax—vibrant colors that overstimulate the brain, or harsh, too-bright finishes that bounce artificial light around the room.
If you struggle to turn off your brain at night, the fix might be simpler than you think. Here’s how to paint your bedroom to optimize it for deep sleep, relaxation, and better rest.

Lean into the science of sleep colors.
Your eyes have specialized receptors that communicate directly with your brain’s internal clock. (Like we mention in our color psychology post!) Certain colors trigger alertness, while others signal to your nervous system that it’s time to slow down.
If you’re looking for a palette that supports rest and rejuvenation, these colors are our favorites…
- Soft, muted blue. According to behavioral color studies, blue is universally recognized as the most calming color. It mimics the tranquil evening sky and has been shown to lower heart rates and blood pressure.
- Earthy sage green. Green brings the soothing vibes of nature into your home. Muted sage or soft olive tones are grounding, helping to alleviate stress after a long day.
- Warm, cloudy grey or cream. If you prefer neutrals, avoid painting your walls sterile white. Instead, try a warm grey or soft cream with undertones that give warm blanket, not cold office building.
Colors to avoid: Bright white, red, purple, or yellow. These shades increase your heart rate and stimulate brain activity. Great for a home gym or creative studio, but not for a sleep space!
Eliminate glare with a flat or matte finish.
When selecting your paint, the sheen level or finish plays a huge role in how calm the room feels. For bedrooms, flat or matte finishes are the gold standard.
High-gloss and semi-gloss paints act like mirrors, reflecting light from streetlamps, passing cars, or your phone screen. This creates a glare around the room that keeps your brain alert. A matte finish absorbs light rather than reflecting it. This creates a velvety, soft texture on the wall that lets your eyes properly rest.
If you’re worried about how obvious scuffs may be on a matte surface, don’t fret. Many modern professional paint lines offer high-performance matte formulas that wipe clean without sacrificing that soft look.

Don’t ignore the “fifth wall’ (or, the ceiling).
Most people default to leaving their ceiling a standard bright white. While this is fine in most rooms, it can feel incredibly bright and disruptive when you’re lying in bed trying to fall asleep.
To maximize relaxation, consider painting your ceiling a similar color to your walls, but mixed at about 50% lighter. Or, for a deeply cozy cocoon effect, you can even paint the ceiling the exact same tone and finish as the walls. This erases those hard contrast lines where the wall meets the ceiling and tricks the eye into feeling a sense of infinite, calm space.
Ensure a clean and healthy sleep environment.
The process of painting your bedroom shouldn’t compromise your sleep quality. Traditional paints release volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, that emit strong chemical odors. These can disrupt your respiratory system and keep you awake long after you’re done painting.
For any bedroom project (or any indoor painting project, really) we recommend and use low-VOC or zero-VOC paints. Brands like Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore have engineered eco-friendly lines that emit virtually zero odor during and after application. According to indoor air quality guidelines published by the American Lung Association, minimizing exposure to toxic paint VOCs in bedrooms is the most important step toward protecting long-term lung health and improving your sleep quality.
